The Intersection of Homelessness & Domestic Violence

"Domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness for women and children in the United States.  Many victims leave their housing to escape violence and do not have the resources to support housing alone.  Others are evicted from housing due to their batterer’s disruptive and often criminal behavior, or have terrible credit and rental histories due to tactics of financial abuse.  Victims are often also barred from housing due to the risk their batterers pose."

Housing - Does One Size Fit All?

"91.6% of homeless mothers experience severe physical and/or sexual abuse during their lifetimes."

Homeless shelters in Massachusetts are at capacity. Motels accommodate the overflow. The majority of homeless shelters don’t have the capacity to provide services to address domestic violence. Thus the family’s primary reason for homelessness -- domestic violence -- is not addressed.  In most cases the cycle of violence continues.
